CHAPTER SEVEN
SUNDAY night, Jane stood at the entrance to aisle four and smiled. Volunteering at the Keller Auditorium would take her mind off Chase. She could forget about their kiss and the lack of an e-mail or a phone call from him and enjoy being back at the theater. She missed the anticipation of the crowd as curtain time drew near, the excitement as the music played and the escape watching a show could provide. Attending the theater had been one of her most favorite hobbies until her father got sick.
âHey, Jane, long time no see,â an usher in the lobby said. His bald head gleamed from the lights. âWhere have you been?â
âHi, Fred.â She adjusted the stack of programs in her hands. âI havenât had time to volunteer lately. Too busy with my job and school, but Dotty Brees was sick tonight, so they asked if I could fill in.â
âWell, itâs good to see you,â he said. âIâd better get to my post or there will be trouble.â
In the lobby, patrons sipped drinks and purchased souvenirs.
âHow long is intermission tonight?â a man in a polo shirt and khakis asked her. Behind him stood a well-coiffed woman in a tight black dress and a restless looking teenage boy with more body piercings than Jane could count.
âIntermission is only fifteen minutes long so we recommend preordering beverages.â
He took two of the programs she offered.
âAn usher can help you locate your seats.â Jane handed the boy a program, but he gave it back. âEnjoy the show.â
Or at least try not to hate it too much. He didnât look the type to appreciate the romantic comedyâthe kind of musical Jane used to love. She liked nothing better than seeing a show, tapping her foot to the beat and laughing. She hadnât had much time for that lately, but maybe that would change.
As she distributed more programs, Jane heard laughter. A beautiful woman, in a shimmering blue cocktail dress, flipped her luxurious mane of chestnut hair behind her shoulder and placed her hand onâ¦
Chase.
His shoulder, actually.
But it didnât matter where.
Janeâs heart pounded in her throat. Her stomach knotted. She clutched the programs to her chest.
And tried not to care.
So what if heâd kissed her yesterday? So what if he was out on a date with someone else tonight? Jane was the one who had suggested they be friends. She shouldnât care who he was with or what he did.
But she did. A lot.
Her heart felt as if it had been cut in two. Ridiculous.
Two kisses did not make a relationship, no matter how incredible they had made her feel.
âCan we have a program please?â
âIâm so sorry.â She focused on the two gentlemen, one in jeans and a T-shirt and the other in a dark suit, and handed them each a program. She repeated her standard speech, barely aware of what she was saying and directed them to the usher.
The men thanked her.
She glanced over at Chase, but he was gone. His date, too. Relief mingled with anxiety.
